The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo
This is one of my favorite books of all time. A good friend of mine gave me the book for my birthday a few years ago.
It's a magical story of a shepherd boy who travels in search of a worldly treasure and the adventures he had along the way. It's a story about listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and above all, following our dreams.
Some of my favorite passages:
- When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.
- "Never stop dreaming," the old king had said. "Follow the omens."
- When the shepherd boy was robbed of all his money, he realized that he had to choose between thinking of himself as the poor victim of a thief and as an adventurer in quest of his treasure. "I'm an adventurer, looking for treasure," he said to himself.
- It was the language of enthusiasm, of things accomplished with love and purpose, and as part of a search for something believed in and desired.
- Intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life where the histories of all people are connected, and we are able to know everything, because it's all written there.
- Be aware of the place where you are brought to tears. That's where I am, and that's where your treasure is.
I have been reading the book at least once a year hoping that someday soon, I can set out on an adventure in search of my treasure. I have recently started to read it again but haven't been able to concentrate on it. It's possible that I believe that I am on my journey towards a dream and reading it right now is not necessary.
